an understanding

an understanding settles between bills of thought and this
thing we call the body borrows on wonder
for words concerning the world that fill
with pistachio and cream gaze forwards
on green and eyes supposing they see  …

but my hands take charge of these lines
I must write and decode the suitcase
jam of blue-buttoned cozies and robes
an occasional overcast worn for ceremony
and blabber (I realize it falls in the same) shells that
sound like the cast of sea in just one note

said the chemist, I tailor life to the make
of a jungle
tune in and out drop the leaves and water

colors of wolf while grief wraps scarves

around its neck like a noose, or a chill
but still the cold enters the skin
and the fortress that is, the body

itches along the banks of river ripe and smoothe
flow as a heated frost like drops
at the doorstep where a stranger
arrives and you have little
to say but: what took you

long?
I’m losing myself

to the taste of words
better than blackberries in the summer
