● Project Overview

“Out of the Margins”

The Bike Brigade is a group of 1000+ volunteer cyclists delivering food and other essentials to underinvested communities across Tkaronto (Toronto).

Committed to challenging systems of oppression and upholding the values of solidarity and equity, The Bike Brigade supports the identification of barriers to social and structural change, engages in equity-informed support, and provides assistance to racialized and other oppressed groups demanding justice.

Program Structure

Over the summer, we took stories from the Toronto cycling community out of the margins. The Out of the Margins event series brought together Toronto’s (Tkaronto) diverse cycling community through a variety of monthly arts- and discussion-focused gatherings from July to October.

Small summer events involved park picnics, collaborative art, reflection, and panel discussions. The anchoring October event featured an art showcase and live music for 100+ attendees. Held at local venues across the city, these experiences built bonds while making cycling more accessible, in turn bolstering the impact of Bike Brigade’s food security work.

Target Audience

The primary audience for this event series was the Bike Brigade community—physically active, socially conscious, and engaged members of the Toronto community.

Community members were primarily between the ages of 25 and 55 and represented diverse ethno-cultural backgrounds.
